The Astondoa Ax8: A New Paradigm for Compact Yachting

By Sophia Spanton

Astondoa’s Ax8 is poised to make waves at the Palma International Boat Show (30 April – 3 May 2025), redefining expectations for compact luxury yachts. Designed in collaboration with Cristiano Gatto, this crossover model emphasizes social connectivity and intelligent design, proving that impactful experiences need not rely on scale.

Despite her compact footprint, the Ax8 maximizes every square metre. The 6.22-metre beam creates a sense of openness rarely seen in yachts of this category, while the seamless indoor-outdoor flow, a hallmark of Gatto’s work, and ensures guests remain immersed in their surroundings. Floor-to-ceiling glazing floods the main salon with natural light, accentuating materials like brushed oak, and custom textiles in warm, neutral tones.

Her layout prioritises versatility: her aft deck’s modular seating transforms effortlessly from a dining area to a sun lounge, while the flybridge offers dual functionality as a social hub or secondary helm station.

Powered by twin Volvo Penta D13 IPS 1350 engines, the Ax8 achieves a cruising speed of 15 knots, with a range of 420 nautical miles. The IPS propulsion system ensures precise handling and reduced vibration, ideal for coastal hopping in the Balearics. Astondoa has also integrated subtle sustainability features, including energy-efficient lighting and lightweight composites, though the focus remains on performance tailored to Mediterranean cruising.

The Ax8’s true innovation lies in its ability to foster connection. The hydraulic swim platform extends the living space to the water’s edge, while the forward cockpit’s wraparound seating invites impromptu gatherings. Below deck, four cabins (configurable as three or four), including a full-beam VIP suite, offer privacy without sacrificing communal areas. Crew quarters are discreet yet functional, ensuring seamless service during day trips or weekend escapes.

As a standout at the Palma International Boat Show, the Ax8 will anchor Astondoa’s display in the Superyacht Village. Visitors can explore her adaptable spaces, from the galley’s ergonomic design to the helm’s intuitive navigation interfaces. The show will also highlight Astondoa’s broader portfolio, including the As5, and 377 Coupé.

In a market increasingly driven by experiential cruising, the Ax8 answers the call for yachts that prioritise connection over ostentation. She is a vessel designed for those who value quality time with guests, whether hosting a sunset aperitivo or island-hopping along Mallorca’s coves.
